The Psychology of BDSM: Why Are People Drawn to It?

Most of the available evidence shows that the majority of BDSM enthusiasts are mentally healthy and typical in every respect except that they find traditional (“vanilla”) intimacy unfulfilling and want something more intense.

“People always ask if it’s normal to be interested in BDSM,” says Michal Daveed, a spokeswoman for The Eulenspiegal Society, a nonprofit organization in New York City that describes itself as the “oldest and largest BDSM support and education group” in the country.

“Normal is a funny word to describe a really widespread and diverse humanity. If your definition of normal is how many people are doing this, it’s way more people than you may think,” says Daveed. “And if your definition of normal is ordinary, the BDSM world is full of ordinary people whose sexuality happens to be hardwired a particular way.”

One landmark study published in 2008 in the Journal of Sexual Medicine backs Daveed up. (9) It found that people who engaged in BDSM were more likely to have experienced oral sex or anal sex, to have had more than one partner in the previous year, to have had sex with someone other than their regular partner, and to have taken part in phone sex, visited an internet sex site, viewed an X-rated film or video, used a sex toy, had group sex, or taken part in manual stimulation of the anus, fisting, or rimming.

However, they were no more likely to have been coerced into sexual activity and were not significantly more likely to be unhappy or anxious. Indeed, men who had engaged in BDSM scored significantly lower on a scale of psychological distress than other men.

“Our findings support the idea that BDSM is simply a sexual interest or subculture attractive to a minority, and for most participants not a pathological symptom of past abuse or difficulty with ‘normal’ sex,” the researchers concluded.

“BDSM is a healthy expression of sexuality,” says Filippo M. Nimbi, PhD, a researcher at the Institute of Clinical Sexology and in the department of dynamic and clinical psychology at Sapienza University, both in Rome.

Dr. Nimbi is also the coauthor of a study published in the March 2019 issue of The Journal of Sexual Medicine that compared 266 consensual BDSM practitioners to 200 control subjects who described their sex lives as traditional. (10) Echoing the earlier study, the researchers found that the BDSM group tended to report fewer sexual problems than the general population.

“People engaging in BDSM are usually people who have thought a lot about their sexuality,” Nimbi explained in an email. “They have explored and faced their sexual boundaries. Basically, they know what they like, and they do it. This has a positive outcome on their sexual experiences and on the overall quality of their lives.”

Many people think it’s a pathology or a perversion to, say, want to be spanked hard and to be happy about that, he added. “We each develop our erotic fantasies from our different tastes, experiences, and curiosities, beginning in childhood and lasting until the end of our lives. Everyone is different. We can develop the same fantasy from different stories, and we can develop different fantasies from the same stories. Some people find in BDSM a way to be free, to get wild, to let go, and to play a different role from their everyday lives. And if they get satisfaction and respect the ‘rules,’ why should it be abnormal?”

What are your thoughts about this, lets read your review.

Dominance 101 Power Play

Power Play and More Explicit Dom/sub Dynamics

  • Bondage: Buy some rope, tape, handcuffs, four-poster bed restraints, etc. OR improvise and substitute with household items such as a scarf or belt. Tie her wrists behind her back, and force her to suck you off. Or tie her to the bed frame (wrists and ankles spread-eagle, or just wrists) and tease her (great scenario to incorporate orgasm denial/forced orgasms here!). Think about including a blindfold to enhance the experience or to make her feel even more “vulnerable/helpless.” “I love having you all tied up so I can do whatever I want to that sexy/perfect/hot/tight little body of yours.” “I’m going to tease you for hours, and there’s nothing you can do about it now.” “I’m going to tease you until you beg me to let you cum/for my cock.”
    • If you want to prolong the tied up experience or create some nice sexual tension/anticipation, leave her tied up so she can see you, and then jack yourself off while enjoying the view. “I think I’m just going to enjoy the view for awhile.” Or alternate masturbating yourself and sliding your cock up and down her vaginal lips and along her clit.
    • Safety point: NEVER leave someone tied up alone in a room (if you need to leave to go to the bathroom or anything like that for a few minutes, make sure you can hear her if she calls out to you. NEVER LEAVE SOMEONE GAGGED AND TIED UP!). Also, have a pair of safety scissors nearby in case you ever need to get her untied quickly. Please do your research on rope-tying and/or other kinds of restraints if you are engaging in bondage.
  • Writing on her body: Use a dark marker (preferably one that doesn’t smear too easy) and write on a part (or various parts) of her body. What you write is obviously up to the comfort level and boundaries set by you and your partner – anything from a word (i.e. “Slut”, “Whore,” “Cunt,” “Bitch”, “Slave”, “Pet”, “Cumslut”) to sentences (i.e. “I’m a cock-loving dirty little slut,” “Property of [Name]/my Master”).
  • Make her put on a show for you: Command her to give you a striptease or a lap dance. Or get her to masturbate for you to watch. Or pick out a sex toy (i.e. dildo, vibrator, anal beads, etc.) for her to use on herself while you watch her use it. “I want to watch you play with/touch yourself.” “I want you to make yourself cum.” “Fuck yourself with this [give her whatever sex toy you’ve chosen]. Don’t stop until you’ve cum.”

In general, some suggestions for dirty talk that MAY add to a power-play dynamic:

  • Commands: “Come here.” “Suck me.” “Get on your knees.” “Beg for my cock.” “You’re going to cum for me now.” “I want you wet for me.” “Get on the bed and spread your legs/pussy/ass open for me.” “I want you on your knees, face down, ass up.” “Touch yourself.” (Try incorporating “now” at the end of any of these commands in a stern voice).
    • Note: If your girl does not like being blatantly ordered around, you can add a “I want you to…” in front of these kinds of commands to make it possibly more subtle or enjoyable.
  • Creating a sense of “possession” or “possessiveness”: “Mmm this tight/hot/sexy/perfect little body/ass/pussy belongs to me. Do you understand?” “You’re mine to play with and do whatever I want with.” Even a simple: “Mine” or “You’re mine” growled into the ear may be very arousing.
  • Erotic Verbal Degradation [Warning: This is generally a hate it or love it extreme, so please be careful – know your boundaries and understand that these terms can have EXTREMELY negative reactions and be an immediate turn-off for many women]:
    • Call her a “dirty/filthy/naughty little slut/whore/cunt/bitch/cumslut/sex toy.” “The only thing you’re good for is to be fucked/satisfying/serving me.”
    • Make her degrade herself: “What are you?” [Her: “Your little slut/whore/cunt/bitch/cumslut”] “What are you good for?” [Her: To be fucked/used/satisfying you”] “You’re my dirty/filthy/naughty little slut/whore/cunt/bitch/cumslut/sex toy. Say it/Repeat it.” If she hesitates, punish her with a slap/spank/pinch. “Not fast/quick enough. Let’s try again. (Repeat the question/your demand).” If her response is satisfactory, “Good girl/slut/whore/cunt/bitch/cumslut” Or “That’s better.” If you are not satisfied with her response, punish her until she gets it right.
    • Make her call you “Sir” or “Master.” Punish her every time she forgets to refer to you as that.
  • Praise/Compliments [This is a very good parallel to those who are not into verbal degradation, but still enjoy the power-play (Master/slave) dynamic]:
    • Positive terms like “Good girl/pet/slave” or “Sweetheart”, “Angel”, “Baby girl”, “Little one.”
    • You can “soften” “degrading” terms by adding a positive adjective – i.e. “What a sweet/good/beautiful/sexy/perfect/lovely/pretty little slut/whore you are.”
    • Praise her for satisfying you so well or how pleased you are with her behaviour or how well she’s pleased you: “What a good cock-sucking slave you are.” “You’ve satisfied/pleased me/your master very much.” “You’re such a good obedient little slave/girl/pet.” Or for taking her punishment so well: “You’re such a good girl for taking your punishment so well.”

A-Z Fetishes And List Of Kinks And Terminology

Confused about BDSM terminology? Want to know what the difference between a freakout and a failsafe? Need to know the importance of aftercare or what irrumatio is?

BDSM, also known as Bondage and Discipline (BD), Dominance and Submission (DS), Sadism and Masochism (SM), is the perfect acronym combining overlapping abbreviations of some of the world’s best-known fetish and power play practices. It seems right then that BDSM should cover a cornucopia of other abbreviations, acronyms and specialist terms.

To avoid any confusion, we wanted to put together an ultimate guide to the most popular BDSM terms with a brief definition of each. If we’ve missed anything it, feel free to comment and we’ll be sure to add it.

Dominance 101- Communicate Your Desires

Step One: Communicate Your Desires
Before any bedroom action begins, it’s always good (and necessary with this kind of play) to sit down with your partner and discuss exactly what you will be getting into. It’s not enough for a partner to just say that she (or he) “wants to be dominated”, or “wants you to take charge”, or “wants to be taken”, or “wants you to be rougher (or more aggressive)”. Every person is different, every couple is different, so obviously desires, fantasies, expectations, and actions are going to be very different. An “I want to be dominated” from one girl may mean “I want you to pin my wrists gently above my head”, but to another girl it may mean “I want you to face fuck me with your cock until I gag while getting flogged with a rider’s crop.”

So get a clear picture of what you and your partner are comfortable with, and would like to explore together. If you or your partner are unsure or unable to come up with specific acts, consult resources (basic Google search, BDSM websites, erotica, porn, etc.)!

Step Two: Establishing Boundaries & Negotiation

For many of these kinds of checklists, you can indicate which acts are of interest to you. Both partners should fill these out – it’s not just about what the submissive is willing to engage in, the dominant also must feel comfortable performing these acts as well! For example, if a sub expresses the desire to get slapped in the face, but the Dom feels uncomfortable or uneasy doing so, then it’s just equally important that (s)he indicate that (s)he has no desire for slapping.

When going through these different items/acts, it’s helpful to indicate:

  • Things you definitely want to try
  • Things you are interested in trying but may need more time (i.e. more research needed, not ready to try out just yet, etc)
  • Things you are tentative about, but are willing to try if your partner expresses an interest in
  • Things you do not really want to engage in, but are negotiable (soft limit)
  • Things that you definitely do not want to try ever (hard limit)

Another aspect to consider is the intensity level of a desired activity. Maybe you and your partner have indicated an interest in spanking. But how much does s(he) want to be spanked? One spank every few minutes? 10 spanks in succession? Continuous spanks for 20 minutes? And with what? Your hand? A belt? A ruler? A flogger? A riding crop? A cane? These are all important things to consider! You should do a “test-trial” of such activities to get a good idea of what your partner can handle and/or is looking for. For example, give your partner a few spanks on the ass and get their feedback, i.e.: “Harder”, “Softer”, “More”, “Less”, etc.

These boundaries are also not limited to just physical activities. It may also involve any verbal activities as well, such as dirty talking during a scene, verbal degradation and/or humiliation. For example, some people like to be called a “dirty little slut/whore/cunt/bitch/slave/pet” – maybe they really enjoy one term, but another they absolutely hate (i.e. being called a “slut” is okay, but “cunt” is a hard limit).

If this is your first time “playing” (enacting out a Dom/sub dynamic in the bedroom), it’s good to outright establish the boundaries for that first “scene” – i.e., even though you both may have indicated an interest in choking, perhaps you don’t want to start out with that on your first time – start slowly, there will be plenty of time to experiment and try out all kinds of different things in the future!

Always respect established boundaries – even if things are going amazing, and you think s(he) would be okay with going further, please don’t (unless they give you verbal permission during the play session). Remember, it’s always better for your partner to ask you to take things further later on, than for you to take things too far without permission and ruin the experience and make him/her reluctant to want to try again in the future.

Come up with a safeword. Always. Even if you don’t think you need one…fantasies are one thing, actual enactment of them is another, your partner may not actually enjoy the reality of a particularly Dom/sub play once (s)he experiences it so always play safe than be sorry.

The most common safeword system is the “green-yellow-red” light system:

  • “Green”: Everything is going great, keep going!
  • “Yellow”: Starting to feel anxious/worried/hesitant, please be careful and check in with me.
  • “Red”: STOP NOW!

In cases in which you may not be able to use a safeword (i.e. gagging, breath play, having your face shoved into a pillow, face-fucking, etc.), you will need to establish a “safe gesture” – it can be anything like blinking one eye a certain number of times, tapping your partner’s wrist a certain number of times, holding up a certain number of fingers for your partner to see, snapping your fingers, whatever.

Another thing in regards to safety is if you are ever engaging in anything potentially risky – i.e. breath play (including light choking), knife play, impact play, bondage, etc. – please do your research (consult online resources, books, guides, BDSM communities, etc) so you know how to engage in these acts safely and responsibly!

Lastly, constantly be aware of yourself and your partner during your play sessions. If (s)he appears to hesitate, looks anxious or uncomfortable in their behavior, STOP IMMEDIATELY. Check in with them, ask them if anything is wrong, MAKE SURE NOTHING IS WRONG. Or if you just want to do a quick check in, ask for a color (assuming you are using the “green-yellow-red” light system). You can still check in with your partner without breaking the Dom/sub dynamic: You can ask them questions while still engaging in the Dom role: “I think you deserve to be punished, you’re going to get 10 spanks to your tight little ass. Tell me, do you think that is a fitting punishment?” “I want you on your knees sucking my cock until you’re gagging. Now tell me, are you going to be a good girl and do what I say?” You can determine a lot by their responses to these kinds of questions – whether they are enthusiastic and eager in their reply, or whether they seem a bit nervous or anxious or hesitant.

If you have any doubt in your mind, just stop. If (s)he uses the safeword, STOP IMMEDIATELY. Give her/him a second to relax and decompress. Talk about it, get them to communicate what went wrong. Please, please DO NOT continue, even if (s)he says (s)he is okay to get back into it. Just stop for the night. And please reassure and ENCOURAGE her/him to use the safeword.

Dominance 101 – Aftercare

Step Four: Aftercare & “Debriefing”
Many of these sessions can be emotionally (not only physically) exhausting and draining. So please take care of your partner after! Make sure she/he is physically okay, get them water if they need, check for any markings/bruises/cuts that may require any care if applicable, etc.

Help them get out of the Dom/sub space – hug, kiss, cuddle/spoon, tell them you love them, watch a movie, etc. Also, don’t forget that the one dominating may require aftercare as well! Sometimes Doms feel bad or guilty for “hurting” their partner (even though everything was perfectly consensual and enjoyed!) – they may need positive reassurance that their partner enjoyed being dominated and encouragement that it was a pleasurable experience.

Another thing that is great to do (especially if you’re just starting out) is to discuss how the session went – talk about things that you both enjoyed, ask what things you did not like, etc. This allows you to progress and really hone in on what kinds of things you both are into, what kind of dynamic you’d like, things that you definitely want to keep exploring in the future, changes in intensity level for certain acts (maybe you discover you have a higher pain tolerance when aroused and you’d like to be spanked harder!), things you don’t want to try again in the future, and so on. Remember, open and good communication is one of the MOST essential aspects when incorporating Dom/sub play in the bedroom!

About This Guide
So because this is only a beginner’s guide meant for those who are just starting out or are interested in a light domination-submission dynamic to add to their bedroom play, I’m not going to delve into anything really BDSM-intensive (i.e. flogging/whipping, extreme breath control, knife play, blood play, etc.).

Also, an important aspect to consider is that a lot of times “dominating” doesn’t just mean having “rougher” sex, a lot of the time it’s about the attitude you covey, the words you say, the look you give – a firm grip on the wrists and positioning it above a partner’s head while you growl something naughty in their ear may be more effective than simply aggressive PIV fucking. You don’t need to be much h2er and bigger to dominate a partner either. Keep this in mind – it’s all about the dynamic!

Another part of this guide will include some suggestions/examples of “dirty talk” throughout the guide of things you can say while engaging in a dominating act (they will be added in quotations). A lot of examples may include terms like “slut/whore/slave” – please note that these terms can have EXTREMELY negative reactions and be an immediate turn-off for many women. Please substitute them with more positive terms if that is what your partner prefers (i.e. “good girl/pet/slave”, “sweetheart”, “angel”, “baby girl”) – for more detailed suggestions, consult the “Erotic Verbal Degradation” versus “Praise/Compliments” sections.

In addition, unfortunately this guide was written with the perspective of a male dominating his female partner, so I apologize for the limited perspective of male Dom/female sub heterosexual relationship. Also, the suggestions in this specific guide are strictly from “what the Dom can do” perspective; there will be a separate guide for suggestions on “what the sub can do.”

Lastly, I cannot stress enough is that EVERY INDIVIDUAL IS DIFFERENT, EVERY COUPLE IS DIFFERENT. This guide is NOT a guaranteed crowd pleaser, please do not assume that you can just follow the steps and your partner is going to love it – I can guarantee that there will be readers who will hate what is written here or find the dirty-talking ridiculous and silly. These are just some suggestions and recommendations based on experience, discussions with others, and getting feedback from people who have enjoyed these kinds of activities or have Dom/sub (moderate/less extreme) fantasies. And I’m hoping some people will find it helpful/interesting. But again this will ALWAYS vary from partner to partner.

Now let’s get things started! 😉

“Gentle” Dominating
Push/pin her against the wall/floor/table/desk/bed. You can also push/pin her against whatever hard surface with her back facing you and her front pressed against the wall/floor/table/desk/bed) and play with her from behind. Hold down her wrists with a firm grip (above her head, behind her back, down by her sides). Lean your body weight against her to create the feeling like you are dominating her body. Push your knee between her legs and roughly spread them wide. “Spread wide for me, sweetheart.” “I want your legs spread open for me. Are we clear?”
Manhandle her. Put your hands all over her as if you can’t get enough. Grab her breasts, squeeze her ass, cup her crotch. Worship her body with a kind of “animalistic” raw need. “God I love this hot/sexy/perfect/tight ass of yours.” “This hot/sexy/perfect/tight ass/body of yours is all mine tonight.” “You have the hottest/sexiest/most perfect/tightest little body ever.” “Your body is mine to fuck however I want.” “I can’t wait to fuck you.”
Kiss her like you need it to breathe. Grab her chin or the back of her neck, and pull her mouth to yours. Plunge your tongue in her mouth. Try biting gently/nibble on her bottom lip or tongue.
Run your fingers through her hair and pull gently. Tug her hair so that it forces her to look up at you, give her a sexy smirk, and kiss her roughly. Alternatively, tug her hair so it tilts/turns her head to the side to allow you to suck/kiss/nibble along her neck/shoulder blades/collarbones.
Tip: Grabbing small bits of hair makes hair-pilling more painful, larger chunks less so. Pulling at the base of the hair is also less painful than pulling at the ends.
Grind your hips against her crotch or between her ass cheeks (if you have her front pressed against something and her back facing you), let her feel your arousal pressed against her. “Can you feel how hard you make me?” “Fuck, you make me so hard.” “I can’t wait to shove this [grind your crotch into her] into that sweet pussy of yours.” “God I need/want to be inside of you.”
Play with her clothed. Slide your hand down her shirt and grope her breasts, or even squeeze her through her bra until she’s desperate for the skin-on-skin contact. Grab the sides of her pants (or belt holes if her pants permit) and pull her against your crotch so you can grip her ass. Rub her crotch through her pants/panties. Slide your hand down her pants (or up her skirt/dress) and slip a finger(s) through her panties and give her a slow fingering. “Something wrong sweetheart? Why are you getting so wet?” “I love how wet you’re getting for me.” “Look how wet you are/you’re getting. What/You’re such a dirty little slut/whore.”
Taking it Further
Scratching: Use your fingernails and scratch along her back/shoulders/breasts/stomach. Or lightly dig your nails into her ass/back/legs.
Biting: Bite along her neck/shoulder blades/collarbones/inner thighs. Alternate with light kisses or tongue flicks. Bite her nipples, alternate with licking, swirling your tongue around the nipple, and sucking.
Spanking: Slap her ass. Try mixing it up, don’t just spank her a billion times (unless that is what she prefers): spank, rub her ass with the palm of your hand/grip it with your hand, slap it, etc. “I fucking love your tight little ass.” “This beautiful ass is all mine…in fact I think I should leave a mark so you’ll remember who it belongs to [slap].”
Pinching: Give her nipples a quick pinch with your fingers. Alternate with gentle licking/sucking/kissing, and biting. Give her ass/breasts/sides a quick stinging squeeze as you play with her body.
Alternate between pain and pleasure: Whether you’re scratching, biting, spanking, or pinching, try alternating with gentle acts (i.e. kissing, sucking/licking, caressing) on that same body part that you’ve inflicted pain on. The sensations as you shift from giving pain and pleasure can be really arousing.
If you choose to leave marks (through scratching, biting, or sucking hard): “I love marking your perfect little body.” “You’re mine, every time you see this mark, you better remember that.” [As with everything, some girls really do not want any visible body markings, so please keep that in mind before you start leaving hickeys, bite/scratch marks anywhere!]
Gagging: Gag her with a piece of cloth, some kind of ball-gag, duct-tape, etc. [Personal favorite is getting fucked with panties on, then having them taken off, and shoved in my mouth as a gag]. “I love seeing that perfect/pretty little mouth of yours stuffed up.” “You’re/My dirty little slut is being far too loud, I’m going to have to find a way to shut that perfect/pretty little mouth of yours up.”
Safety point: Because your mouth will be gagged, you must have a “safe gesture” (or if you both come up with an established “noise” – i.e. her making a ‘mmhpf’ sound three times in succession) as a sign to stop if things get too much.
Orgasm Denial: Bring her to the edge of orgasm. “Do you want to cum?” Force her to say yes, then: “I want to hear you beg for it.” Make her beg. “Louder.” Make her beg some more. “Good girl…” Proceed to make her cum (with your tongue, fingers, cock, a toy, whatever). Or tease her some more… “No I don’t think I’ll let you just yet…” “Not good enough, you’ll have to be more convincing/persuasive.” “I love how desperate you are. I think I’m just going to have fun teasing you some more…”
If you cannot tell when she is about to cum, get her to tell you when she’s close/on the edge. When she tells you, stop your ministrations to make her beg, and give it enough time for her to “come down” from the edge, and then begin teasing her again. Also, try to pay attention to verbal and nonverbal cues (i.e. change in breathing rate, body flush, gripping of sheets/you, different kinds of moaning/gasping/whimpering, etc.) when she’s about to cum so you can start getting an idea of when she’s reached that point for future reference.
Forced Orgasms: When you know your girl is about to cum: “I want you to cum NOW.” “Come for me, baby.” After you’ve made her cum, “Have you had enough?…I don’t think you have. I want you to cum again for me.” “I want to feel you soak my fingers/cock/tongue with your delicious juices.” “I fucking love making you cum, I think I want to do it again…” [Make her cum again.]
Tip: Using a sex toy really helps in this case in case your tongue/fingers/penis get tired! Also note: Some girls become really sensitive after coming, and don’t enjoy any further stimulation after.
Make her pleasure you: Force her on her knees and suck you off. “Get on your knees now.” “You’re going to suck me until I’m satisfied.” “Suck me with that talented/pretty/perfect little mouth of yours.”
Make her taste herself: After you finger her, place your finger(s) in her mouth, and get her to clean them off. Or if you’ve been using your penis, pull out and get her to clean off your cock. “I want you to taste yourself.” “You’re such a horny little slut, you’ve practically drenched/coated my fingers/cock in your juices. Clean me off.”
Have sex with clothes on. This is ideal if she’s wearing a dress/skirt – hike up her dress/skirt and fuck her like that. If she has pants, pull them off roughly. Move her panties aside (but don’t take them off!) and screw her like that. “Look how wet you’re making your panties…you’re such a dirty little slut/whore/slave.” While fucking, enjoy groping her through her clothes – slide your hands up/down her shirt to squeeze her breasts, slip your hands through her panties to squeeze her ass, etc.
